Will the cruelest month, April, ever end?

t 23:55 on April 25, 2021, the number of people infected with the Covid-19 was 54374 (up 1572 from the previous day), and the number of new infections was 4605.

At 23:55 on April 26, 2021, the number of infected people was 53854 (down 398 from the previous day), and the number of newly infected people was 3320, showing a slight downward trend. Incidentally, the number of infected people in Tokyo was 425.

As for the global outbreak, the number of newly infected people decreased to 794573 (down 38690 from the previous day) at 10:00 on April 27.

However, in Tokyo, the number of newly confirmed infections today, April 27, was 828, almost double the number of yesterday. Ninety percent of these cases are believed to be mutated viruses.
The National Institute of Infectious Diseases estimates that if the mutated virus replaces the existing virus, the number of new positive cases could exceed 2,000 in two weeks.

Covid-19 has changed people’s lives. It has become a matter of course to wear a mask when going out. Disinfectants are placed at the entrances and exits of stores. There was a time when masks, anhydrous ethanol, thermometers, etc. were in short supply and prices soared, but prices have now returned to normal.

There has been news of a large-scale vaccination program, but as more and more mutants emerge, it may not be possible to get the vaccine only twice. In the countryside of Kyushu, where I live, there are no news reports about vaccinations at all. The first priority is to control coronas in urban areas, but although the government says that 1 million doses of the vaccine will be ready by the end of June, I don’t think I can get vaccinated in rural Kyushu.

In any case, the problem will be how to get over the Golden Week holiday from the 29th to the 5th of May. If there is an increase in the number of visitors during the Golden Week, further measures will be urgently needed, and the Olympics will have to make a decision on what to do.

I reminded a famous passage by T.S. Eliot: “April is the cruelest month”.

April is the cruellest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.

The spring weather can make people crazy. The cherry blossom season is over, but the corpses sleeping under the cherry trees may still begin to move in the future.
