Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Attacked and Suffered Cardiopulmonary Arrest While Making a Street Speech in Nara City, Preliminary Report

At around 11:30 a.m. on August 8, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was attacked from behind by a suspicious man while making a street speech on a street in Nara City.

Nara Prefectural Police subdued the man.

According to investigators, Abe was shot from behind with a shotgun.

According to the Nara City Fire Department, he is unconscious and is believed to be in cardiopulmonary arrest.

A Kyodo News reporter who was covering the event heard what sounded like two gunshots when Abe was attacked.
