The animated film “Wish,” commemorating Disney’s 100th anniversary, will be released in winter 2023. The first look depicting the heroine has arrived.
Walt Disney and his brother founded Disney Brothers Cartoon Studios in October 1923. This was the beginning of the Walt Disney Company, which continues to this day and has produced numerous animated films, including “Steamboat Willie,” Mickey Mouse’s screen debut, and “Snow White,” the world’s first full-color feature-length animation. He has produced 61 animated films, including “Strange Worlds,” which will be released on November 23.
The 100th anniversary film, whose original title is “Wish,” was announced on September 9 (US local time) at the D23 EXPO, a Disney fan event. The film takes place in the Kingdom of Rosas, where any “wish” can come true. The main character is Asha, a positive and cheerful 17-year-old heroine. She has the qualities of a leader and cares about the people of the kingdom, but an incident leads her to learn a secret hidden in the kingdom and confront a terrifying enemy.
Asha is voiced by Ariana DeVos, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar at the 94th Academy Awards for her role as Anita in “West Side Story” and is the first queer actor of color to win an Oscar. During her presentation at the D23 EXPO, she sang the song “More for Us,” which is said to be sung during the scene where Asha learns of the crisis in her kingdom and makes a strong wish to the stars. The music will be performed by Julia Michaels, a songwriter and artist known for her song “A Her” and who provided music for “Sugar Rush: Online”.
The film will be directed by Chris Buck (“Anna and the Snow Queen”) and Phaun Veerasunthorn, who will make his directorial debut with this film. Veerasunthorn has previously worked on the storylines of “Zootopia” and “Raya and the Dragon Kingdom. The screenplay will be written by Jennifer Lee, the first woman to be selected to co-direct a Disney film with “Anna and the Snow Queen” and currently the studio’s CCO.
The Japanese release will be distributed by Walt Disney Japan. The film will be released in the U.S. on November 22, 2023.
