On 16 December (US time), app research firm SensorTower released its global ranking of mobile games with annual sales exceeding $1 billion in 2021.
The No. 1 ranking was “PUBG MOBILE” by KRAFTON of South Korea and “Kings of Glory” by TiMi Studios of China, both with sales of about $2.8 billion (about ¥318.2 billion), followed by “Yuan Shen” by miHoYo of China in third place with about $1.8 billion (about ¥204.5 billion). U.S. Niantic’s “Pokemon GO” (Pokémon GO) ranked sixth with about $1.2 billion (about ¥136.4 billion). The data was collected between 1 January and 14 December.
The company explained that “the overall mobile gaming market expanded further in 2021”, with eight titles reaching $1 billion in sales, up from five in 2020. Although “Uma Musume Pretty Derby” did not break the $1 billion mark, the company cited its release in February 2021 and the fact that it is only available in Japan as the titles with the potential to become the ninth to cross the mark.
According to the company, by the end of the year, spending on mobile games from the App Store and Google Play combined is expected to reach $89.6 billion (¥10.19 trillion) worldwide, up 12.6% year-on-year.
