July 31 is the birthday of Junji Ito, a master of horror manga and a well-known cat lover, who was born on July 31, 1963 in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
On July 23, 2022 (Japan time), the 34th Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, one of the most prestigious comic book awards in the U.S., honored the English edition of “Junji Ito Masterpiece Collection 4: The Love Affair of the Dead” (Asahi Shimbun Publications) with the “Best Asian Work of the Year” award.

Junji Ito’s works have received the Eisner Award in the following categories: in 2019, the English edition of “Ito Junji Masterpiece Collection 10: Frankenstein” received the “Best Comicalization” award; in 2021, the English edition of “Jigokusei Remina” received the “Best Asian Work” award; and the English edition of “The Best of the Best” received the “Best Writer/Artist Award. Best Writer/Artist” for the English version of “Remina, the Star of Hell” in 2021. This is the fourth time he has received this award.
In accepting the award, Junji Ito said, “I am very surprised to receive the Eisner Award for the English edition of “Shizubito no Koi Warerai” (VIZ Media), following the awards in 2019 and 2021, and I wonder if this is a dream or a reality. However, I believe that this is a result of the excellent translation and binding of the series of translated editions published by VIZ Media, which have pushed up the value of the work,” he commented.
This award is on par with the five-time winner (including Hall of Fame) Osamu Tezuka and four-time winner (including Hall of Fame) Katsuhiro Otomo.
Netflix has also decided to animate all 20 of Junji Ito’s works. Of these, “Tomie,” “Soichi,” and “Hanging Balloon” will be distributed in 2023.
