Sony Interactive Entertainment (SCE) has announced that it will be offering a free update to Horizon Forbidden West from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, regardless of edition, when the game is released on February 18, 2022.

Available for pre-order since September 2nd, Horizon Forbidden West is an open-world action RPG for PS5 and PS4 set in the world of Horizon, where mechanical beasts rule the earth after a great disaster, and follows the epic story of Arloi in the forbidden lands of the American West, where a mysterious new threat lurks. The game is now available for pre-order.

When the game was first available for pre-order, the Standard and Special Editions were not upgradable from PS4 to PS5, and the international FAQ page stated that there were no plans to upgrade the Standard Edition to the Digital Deluxe Edition at this time.

In a post on PlayStation.Blog from September 4, 2021, SIE CEO Jim Ryan said, “It’s clear that the decision we made to open pre-orders for Horizon Forbidden West was misguided. We’ve made it clear that the decision we made when we opened pre-orders for Horizon Forbidden West was misguided,” he said, adding that the free upgrade will be available regardless of the edition of the game.

In the article, PlayStation also announced that it would be offering a $10 upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for future releases of first-party titles for PS4 and PS5. This is likely to apply to titles such as the new God of War and Gran Turismo 7.

Horizon Forbidden West will be released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro on February 18, 2022 and is available for pre-order now.
