According to the announcement made on Monday, Japanese anime director Makoto Shinkai’s animated feature “Suzume” will be competing for the Golden Bear award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival.
This is the first Japanese film to compete for the award since 2021 and the first Japanese animated work to compete in 21 years.
The film follows a high school girl who sets out on a journey to protect against natural disasters and has been showing in Japanese theaters since November 2021.
Shinkai has stated that the story is based on the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern Japan and that he is excited for the opportunity to see how the outside world views their creation.
The winner of the Golden Bear award will be announced on February 26th, the last day of the 73rd Berlinale.
