The Government of Japan announced on Wednesday that 70.1% of the population has received two doses of the new coronavirus vaccine, almost on a par with Italy (second) and ahead of Canada (first) in the G7.
In Europe and the United States, where the number of people infected with HIV has been growing at a sluggish rate of around 60 per cent, the “70 per cent barrier” stood in the way, but in Japan, due to a sense of crisis over infection, the figure has been steadily broken through.
The number of people infected in Japan is currently low due to the effectiveness of the vaccine and other factors, but the effectiveness of the vaccine in protecting against infection is said to decline over time.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) plans to start a third round of additional vaccinations in December to prevent the disease from spreading again as it has overseas, and the development of an implementation system will be a future challenge.
