THE FIRST – INOUE TAKEHIKO ON THE WEB (itplanning.co.jp)

THE FIRST

Takehiko Inoue confesses his feelings in his blog about the film SLAM DUNK.

THE FIRST
It has been several years since I started making the film and it is now nearing completion.
I realise that it is only because of the journey we have been on that we are able to create something new.
The serialisation period from 1990 to 1996 and the long years up to today.
Thank you to all those who read the manga in Jump and in book form, to those who watched the TV animation, and to all the new people who met us not in real time.

When I was working on the weekly series, reading the letters of feedback from readers sent to the editorial office was the most encouraging thing for me. At the time, I was still in the early stages of my career and, to be honest, I feel that most of my gratitude was directed only at my readers.

Time has passed, and now I have a slightly broader perspective, and I feel more gratitude towards many more people.
A lot of people were involved in the process of both manga and animation, from production to delivery to the people at the respective sites. I am very grateful to all these people.

It’s not often you get the chance to know how I feel about my own characters, so I’ll reveal a little bit about them…
I feel that the characters continue to live inside me even after the series has finished.
Every time I draw them in a new edition or illustration collection, I call them out from somewhere and renew them, giving them a new lease of life, so they don’t age, but they are still alive.

As I get older, the number of perspectives from which I perceive the characters gradually increases.
Various perspectives came to mind, such as ‘this guy was like this’ or ‘this happened to him’, and each time I did this, my notes increased a little bit more. It has been updated. Some of the perspectives I couldn’t see 30 years ago, some of them were there from the serialisation but I couldn’t depict them at that time.

In the sense that some of those have been brought to life, we can say that this film is a Slam Dunk with a new perspective.
I worked on this film in the hope that it would have a new kind of life, just like when you draw new pictures of characters, people you must have drawn many times before but meet for the first time.

For those who don’t know, for the first time.
For those who know it.
Slam Dunk for those who know but are seeing it for the first time.

I’d be happy if people could casually enjoy it like that.

The production is now in the midst of its final uphill climb with all the staff.

Yuhiko Inoue.
