The world’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black, issued in 1840, is to be auctioned. The auctioneer, Sotheby’s, announced the news on 26 April. The estimated price is 4-6 million pounds (about 628-940 million yen).
The stamp, which depicts Queen Victoria in profile, was attached to a document dated April 10, 1840, which was in the possession of a Scottish politician involved in the reform of Britain’s postal system. The stamps were put into use on 6 May of the same year.
Only three stamps from the first printed sheet are known to have survived, the remaining two being in the British Postal Museum.
According to Sotheby’s, this is the first time the stamp has been offered at auction. The auction will take place on 7 December.
I wonder who will win the bid?
It’ll be back in the news!
